Description

Coppenrath Spekulatius Spiced Almond Cookies come from a bakery in Geeste, in Lower Saxony, whose red seal carries the date 1825. Spekulatius is the German relative of Belgian speculoos: thin, crisp, pressed into windmill and gabled-house molds, and spiced with cinnamon. This is the almond version, and there is a real quantity of nut in it, 12 percent sliced almonds baked right into the biscuit, with caramel sugar syrup giving the deep amber color and a toffee edge. They snap cleanly and taste toasty rather than sugary. The carton reseals, so an open pack stays crisp for days. Very good with coffee, and better still crumbled over ice cream or a baked apple.
