Rumor has it that a restaurant owner in southern Italy came to this moment of inspiration for the dish when he told his guests that he didn't have enough ingredients to make them a meal. "Facci una puttanata qualsiasi," or "make any kind of garbage," the guest insisted even though the restaurant was about to close. The owner then made them whatever he could find in the kitchen, tomatoes, capers and olives, and that's how Puttanesca sauce was created!
