The name - Calpis - was constructed by combining cal from calcium and pis from Sanskrit Sarpis (meaning clarified butter) to emphasize the richness of this soft drink. Inspired by the dairy product Airag, native to the Mongolian region of northern China, Calpis soft beverage was developed by Kaiun Mishima, who created these beverages based on lactic acid and cultured milk.
