Calpis Co. is a Japanese manufacturer famed for its Calpis Calpico carbonated soft drinks with a light and slightly acidic flavor. Being a subsidiary of Asahi Breweries, Calpic Co. was founded in 1919 when it marketed its first soft drink that quickly gained popularity in pre-war Japan. The name - Calpis - was constructed by combining cal from calcium and pis from Sanskrit Sarpis (meaning clarified butter) to emphasize the richness of this soft drink. Inspired by the dairy product Airag, native to the Mongolian region of northern China, Calpis soft beverage was developed by Kaiun Mishima, who created these beverages based on lactic acid and cultured milk.
